Summary :
In the year AD 3000, Earth is a barren wasteland, plundered of its natural resources by the millennium-long regime of taloned, gas-breathing, nine-foot alien conquerors from the planet Psychlo. Fewer than 35,000 humans survive in a handful of communities scattered across the face of a postapocalyptic Earth.
From a desolate village in the Rocky Mountains near what once was Denver, Colorado, a courageous young man named Jonnie Goodboy Tyler embarks on a hero’s journey to challenge the fearful myths of his people.
Enslaved by the sadistic Terl, the Psychlo security chief of Earth, Jonnie and a small band of survivors pit their quest for freedom against Terl’s ruthless ambition for personal wealth and power in a rebellion that erupts across the continents of Earth and the cosmic sprawl of the Psychlo empire, with the fate of the world, of mankind, and of the galaxies beyond in the balance.

Though the film version is utter trash, when I free up some space on my phone I’m gonna download this.
Really interested to hear how this was meant to viewed/read/listened to.
Tbh, despite Hubbards’ dubious views I’m willing to give this a chance.

They couldn’t get the Cruiser to narrate it? (But they did get Bart Simpson).
@Gryndkor - I think Hubbard proved himself to be quite a humdrum, uninspired sf writer, especially when compared to his contemporaries. His religious enterprise is basically a bad sf conceit. This dramatisation could be entertaining, however (thanks to the uploader).
There is speculation that the Amazon ratings of Hubbard’s books are kept artificially high by True Believers.

As someone who has read this several times as a (pre)teen and tried listening to it later…
It’s a fun rump if you’re not overly sensitive to bad writing.
It even manages to be somewhat insightful for its time and for a younger audience.
E.g. The big showdown ends up being about banking and loans and running a pan-galactic economy - not about spaceships firing lasers at each other.
But read at a later time it is SO ridden with cliches… from the Mary Sue hero (Jonnie Goodboy Tyler anyone) to mustache twirling villain(s) like Terl.
And the language… it’s oh so poor. It’s pulp quality.
And then… there’s that bit where Hubbard forgets he promised this one wasn’t gonna be about Scientology and where he makes psychiatrists the ultimate villains of the universe.
But the ultimate kicker comes when you realize that the original cover has Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, always bearded in the book (beards are a big deal in the story) clean shaven and an idealized version of L. Ron.

Elron wrote some good stuff back in the 40s, but after he became a messiah…. there is great doubt that he actually wrote any of the books that came out under his name. Scientologists were told to buy them, making them bestsellers. And obviously they spent loadsamoney on the film and this… Good luck.

I’ve never been a great fan of Scientology in any sense of the word, but I still really enjoyed Elron’s Mission Earth series was a seriously fun romp, regardless of the bad writing. I would love to get my hands on that audiobook series, except every one I’ve ever heard was ripped at a really crappy bit-rate (48k)

L Ron Hubbard’s best religious work (cough, cough)

I read the novel in my teens and enjoyed it. Some people will trash it because the author created scientology, but there is nothing pseudo-religious about “Battlefield Earth”.
