If you’re an obvious tourist plan on the following: you’re going to be robbed, pickpocketed, have your baggage rifled in your 4 star hotel room and any valuables taken, you will find menus without any prices and when the check comes you’ll find that those drinks the waiter recommended were $25 each. Every attraction you have your heart set on seeing is either “chiuso per restauro” or the line is 2 hours long. Oh yeah a “local” is really going to help you avoid reality. And I’ve got a bridge for sale cheap.

We’ve been to Rome (Italy generally) on several occasions and didn’t experience anything like that. The direct opposite, in point of fact. Some good advice would be to know what you’re about when travelling, and do some prudent research.
Even when we were in Naples - mainly to visit Pompeii & Herculaneum - it was a good experience. And Naples doesn’t have a great rep.

Incidentally, if you’re interested in history, art & architecture (even if you aren’t very much) the Naples Archaeological Museum is staggering - building & exhibits. It completes your experience of Pompeii & Herculaneum, because many of the sites’ artifacts are safely housed there.
Some of the monumental sculptural groups from Rome’s Baths of Caracalla are situated there as well. Magnificent stuff.
